The Partiologist: Plan & Prepare!

Plan & Prepare!

With all my parties, I thought I should let you know that I am not super woman and put these parties together in a week.  I am usually planning for the next party before the one I'm working on is over.  Let's just say there is a method to my madness!  A friend gave me this Hostess Diary and I have used it for each party I've had.
I always think I'll remember all the recipes I've used, but I don't, so with this handy little book, I can look up any item I made for that party and where I found the recipe.  I have TONS of recipes, sometimes several recipes for the same thing and so I record which one I used.  And on the recipe itself I started to make notes as to the every detail that I might have changed, then mark what party I used it for.
Now for the crazy little thing I came up with to make sure my layout for the party goes together.  I designed a little kitchen plan, (NOT to scale) and made several copies.  I use a copy and start marking where I'll put all the little "treats" and all the food and drinks and number them.  From there I'll start to create my menu on a separate piece of paper coordinating with the numbers.

When no one is home, I bring out all my serving trays and the party decor (it feels just like Christmas to get out all the party stuff I had been collecting!) then place everything around the kitchen to get a feel for how I want everything to look.  (I have to do this when my family is not home, because they won't understand why I'm decorating the kitchen for a party that is over a month away - he he!)  Sometimes the vision in my head doesn't always work, so I need time to create a new vision!

I guess you could say that I'm not a "fly by the seat of my pants girl" -
I also, keep file folders filled with party ideas for favors, decor and even recipes that would work for the next party.  I know if I don't do it right away, I'll never even remember what I wanted to make or where I found the recipe.  By the sound of this post, I think I should start taking some ginkgo biloba!!
I'm always on the look out for great buys and if I see something that I love and don't know what I'll do with it, I buy it anyway, I know I'll figure out a way to use it.  Always walk around your home and you'll find something that you'll be able to use for your party, flip it over or add something to it and it will become a brand new decoration!
I hope this helps in your party planning, or maybe you think I'm just a little nutty! And nutty might just be a nice way of saying what you're really thinking!  :)

Plan Ahead!!

  1. From what I've seen so far on your blog, the diary is a wonderful idea! I'm impressed!

  2. Wow! you are so much better then me. I'm a fly by the seat of my pants party girl. I seem to do better under pressure and come up with my best ideas last minute. I do START to plan ahead but ideas FLOOD in even up until the morning OF the party. It seems to work for me but I love your plans.
