The Partiologist: It's Tiki Time!

It's Tiki Time!

I'm feeling like a beach bum lately with all the Hawaiian themed sweets I've been working on.  I'm in serious need of sun and sand along with a tropical drink in my hand.  Or maybe just a trip to the craft store...looks like a trip to the craft store was in my budget.  When I found the jumbo bamboo straws, I didn't know why, I just knew I needed them.  Now I know why.

Tiki Hut Brownie

And by putting my Girl Scout skills to use, I managed to make them into a frame.

Umm, now that I think about it, I was never a Girl Scout.

I was super excited when it really looked like a Tiki Sign, almost made me want to have a party.  Almost.

I'm here to show you how to make the sign, so YOU can have a LUAU.
Turn on the music and let's begin.

Start by mixing up your favorite brownies.
Line a 9 x 13 pan with parchment paper and spray sides with Pam.

Remove from oven and cool.  Lift the brownie from pan with the ends of the parchment paper.

Cut the brownie in half.

Cut a piece of cardboard to fit the brownie and cover it with parchment paper.  Or cut a cake board to fit.

Here's how it all started...
The Bamboo Paper Straws and twine. (The jumbo straws are no longer available, but regular straws would work, Amazon link below).

Place the end of one straw on top of another straw.

Wrap the twine around the two straws, securing gently.

Turn the straws over and tie the twine in a knot.

Measure the brownie and add the bottom two straws (trim the excess), making the bamboo frame.

Mix up brown frosting.  I mixed a light brown and a dark brown, then mixed the two together.

First, I frosted with light brown and I added dark brown down the center and swirled together with an off set spatula.

Use a toothpick to make the marks in the frosting, resembling wood.

Sprinkle a little cocoa powder across the top of the brownie and run spatula through the frosting to blend.

Clean the edges of the brownie with the spatula.

Let's make the fondant decorations starting with the letters and leaves.

Roll and cut bright yellow fondant letters with tappits.

Mix a little yellow with green to make fondant to match the bamboo.

Cut the leaves with a leaf plunger cutter.

Now it's time to make the fondant Hibiscus.

I just love this little cutter/mold.  I use it all the time, one of my best purchases!  I found a few similar molds HERE.

After cutting with the cutter, lay on the mold (dusted with powdered sugar).

Press on the top and you have a beautiful veined hibiscus.

Repeat this process with all the colors you plan to use.

I used a lot of colors! White sugar pearls for the centers.

Lay the bamboo frame over the brownie.

Add a dab of frosting to the edge of the frame and start to add the hibiscus and leaves.

Pipe a bit of royal icing in the center of each hibiscus and attach the pearl.

Add the fondant Tiki Hut letters.

Add a couple more Hibiscus and leaves to the bottom of the frame.

 I'm on Tiki Time!

It's Five O'clock Somewhere!
