The Partiologist: Mummy Cake with Edible Gauze!

Mummy Cake with Edible Gauze!

I would like to start this post by saying how much thought and intricate planning went into the making of this Mummy Cake.  Only I can't.  In reality and as my mom would say...
"it was a happy mistake".  I didn't plan to make a Mummy Cake at all, but when I made a mess of another project, this is what happened...

Mummy Cake

Here's how the mummy cake came to life.

I don't know if you've heard of edible lace?  Well, someday I hope to show you how beautiful it is, but for now, it's edible gauze.

It was a year ago when I had my first attempt at making edible lace and while I loved the way it turned out, it also turned out brittle and that I didn't love.  So I put it away, out of sight but not out of mind.

Fast forward to this year.  While working in my laboratory late one night (okay it was the middle of the day) I decided to give edible lace another try.  This time using a homemade recipe.  I didn't take any photos of the process. It just wasn't coming together the way I thought it should.

I went ahead and tried using it in my mats, but it shriveled up and didn't work.

Not wanting any of it to go to waste, I tried to come up with something fun!

And that's when this idea popped into my head.

Maybe I should have told you it was my original plan and you would have thought I was genius.

But like my mom said, "it was a happy mistake".

And my mom is always right.

So if you're in need of a little happiness, I'll show you how to make a Mummy Cake!

Pipe a bit of the mixture onto a Silpat (or other non-stick) mat.  Homemade Recipe Below.

Use an off set spatula and spread into long strips.

The thinner you spread it, the more transparent it will dry.

Make at least six large strips (gauze), allowing for breakage.

Once the gauze has dried overnight, it will lift off the mat on it's own.

While the gauze is drying, cut a tombstone shape out of paper.  Use the template below, or just wing it.  I drew it first on paper because if I didn't, I might have had two happy mistakes.

Tombstone Template HERE.

Once the template is made, cut a cake board in the same tombstone shape.

Bake a white cake in a 9 x 13 pan.

Remove the cake from the pan, wrap with saran wrap and freeze.

Take the cake from the freezer and lay the paper template on the top.

Cut around the template while the cake is still frozen (to help keep it from crumbling while cutting).

While no one is looking, eat the extra cake pieces.

Mix up a batch of white buttercream.

Lay the cake on the cake board previously cut.

Frost the entire cake, top and sides with the white buttercream.

Roll and cut white fondant with a round cutter.

Roll and cut black fondant with a smaller round cutter.

Place the black on top of the white., use a little water to help them stick together.

Now, you've got your mummy's eyes!

Place the eyes on the cake.

Start laying pieces of the strips across the cake, letting the eyes peek through.

Continue filling the cake with the strips until it is covered.

Trim the edges to fit.

  6. I'm wondering if I could do this by spreading out white chocolate super thin and texturizing it.

    1. It might work, but may not get the edges to look as frayed. It sounds like it's worth a try!
