The Partiologist: Funnel Cakes & Churros!

Funnel Cakes & Churros!

No Carnival would be complete without Funnel Cakes.  I did my research and found a good recipe so I could make them myself.
Funnel Cakes
Easy to make and even easier to eat...great with honey too!

Just follow the directions!  I used a pancake batter pen to make the funnel cakes, worked great!  The recipe is from Martha.  Not my Aunt.  Stewart.

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup packed light-brown sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 quarts canola oil, for frying
  • Confectioners' sugar, for dusting

Next, we're on to Churros!

I hope you didn't throw out the oil because you've got to make one more treat for the carnival. I really wanted to make all the fried carnival stuff outside. I say this because I knew my entire house would smell like grease by the time I finished.

And it did. And I HATE that smell. So as soon as I finished, I washed my clothes, sheets and towels then took a shower, burned a candle and by the next day the smell was gone.

My husband likes that smell because it reminds him of food. Maybe like dinner, something he hardly ever gets.

Now on to the Churros. Homemade Churros.

This recipe came from Betty. Not my Aunt. Crocker. Follow the directions!

    Ingredients:
    Vegetable oil
    4 tablespoons sugar
    2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
    3 1/4 cups Original Bisquick® mix
    1 cup hot water
1 In 3-quart saucepan, heat oil (2 to 3 inches) over medium-high heat until thermometer inserted in oil reads 375°F.

2 In small bowl, mix 3 tablespoons of the sugar and the cinnamon; set aside. In medium bowl, stir Bisquick mix, hot water and remaining 1 tablespoon sugar with spatula until dough forms.

3 Spoon dough into pastry bag fitted with 1/4-inch star tip. Pipe 5-inch strips of dough into hot oil. If necessary, cut dough with knife or scissors between each churro. Cook 2 to 3 minutes, turning frequently, until golden brown. Carefully remove from oil; drain on paper towels.

4 Immediately sprinkle churros generously with sugar-cinnamon mixture. Serve warm.

5 I made the sugar-cinnamon mixture, but wanted to let you know you can buy it already mixed!
(Notice how I covered my cook top with aluminum foil in case it splattered?)
Now you can throw out your oil.
